Storytelling @ Blk 79 Fengshan Diamond RC

I have volunteered myself to do storytelling at the RC every Monday at 8.00 pm. Tiring, but definitely fun and enjoyable. Today I read
1) Rumble In the Jungle - the children loved it
2) Tooth Trouble
After the first story, I had some quizzes for the children. Everyone had a small soft toy as a prize... as a result, it took time to contain their excitment before I could start the second story... learning lesson... give the prize at the end of the session:)

Visit to Koolwerkz Learning Factory

Yesterday, I went on a "learning tour" to Koolwerk Learning Factory, set up in June 2005, by Temasek Poly to provide hands-on training approach for entrepreneurship development. It is located at Block 3017 unit #04-20, Bedok North Street 5, Gourmet East Kitchen. The small outfit is equipped with a complete set of ice cream making plant and facilities and students can simulate learning in a real environment with exposure to ice-cream making processes, inventory control, packing and even marketing! The learning factory now carries six flavours of ice cream... er.. I can only remember these : Mango, Green Tea, Honey Suckle, Strawberry, Vanilla. We tasted their ice-cream and its actually nice! Memo from CEO to Manager:
Today at 11 o'clock there will be a total eclipse of the sun. This is when the sun disappears behind the moon for two minutes. As this is something that cannot be seen every day, time will be allowed for employees to view the eclipse in the parking lot. Staff should meet in the lot at ten to eleven, when I will deliver a short speech introducing the eclipse, and giving some background information. Safety goggles will be made available at a small cost.

Memo from Manager to Department Head:
Today at ten to eleven, all staff should meet in the car park. This will be followed by a total eclipse of the sun, which will appear for two minutes. For moderate cost, this will be made safe with goggles. The CEO will deliver a short speech beforehand to give us all some information. This is not something that can been seen every day.

Memo from Department Head to Floor Manager:
The CEO will today deliver a short speech to make the sun disappear for two minutes in the form of an eclipse. This is something that cannot be seen every day, so staff will meet in the car park at ten or eleven. This will be safe, if you pay a moderate cost.

Memo from floor Manager to Supervisor:
Ten or eleven staff are to go to the car park, where the CEO will eclipse the sun for two minutes. This doesn't happen every day. It will be safe, and as usual, it will cost you.

Memo from Supervisor to staff:
Some staff will go to the car park today to see the CEO disappear. It is a pity that this doesn't happen everyday.

:) I guess in today's context, this is unlikely to happen, .. cause you just have to forward the email from the CEO!!, no need to redo the memo again and again! :)

I didn't know that the google search bar can be used as a caculator, currency converter and also to do much more.... Ai Yoh! This is one of the things I have learnt after attending a tech talk two days ago. This is what this Sua Ku also learnt:
1) Google Docs .......you can create word, excel, and powerpoint lookalike docs. These docs can be set to be viewed by others or even edited, ....good for collaborative work!
2) Google Calendar ...... pull your everyday activties into this calendar. If even has a SMS reminder service to remind you of your meetings, appointments, etc.. and its free :)
3) Google Map ... this one is really cool. Better than your street directory. If you are planning a trip, the maps will be really useful! On the topic of travel, the speaker recommended this website : http://www.tripadvisor.com/ to check out on your travel needs!

Bookmarking platforms : Del.icio.us, Diigo, Ma.gnolia.... use these to tag your favourite stuff

Mad About English - The Movie

When China was announced as Host Country for the Olympic Games, its people went to great lengths to be a hospitable nation. One of the things they did was to learn how to speak Good English! This movie, documents the inspiring and heartwarming efforts of a city preparing to host the Games. It was funny, heart-warming and inspiring to watch! The Chinese people's earnest enthusiasm and perserverance is something I respect.

Circle Painting - 1 August 2008

Circle Painting - what on earth is that? Was not sure either but I went for a workshop last friday that would teach us just that!

Warming-Up
Niep Nguyen was our teacher for the evening. There was around 20 of us at the workshop, all eager and excited. Patient and gentle, he started the session by helping us to wind down. We moved, exercised, danced and got to know each other through relaxing!

The Practice
To give us an idea of what Circle Painting was about, we form into teams of 4 and worked on a piece of A4 paper, using markers and coloured pens. The team starts to draw by having one person draw a dot in the middle of the paper. The members of the team then take turns to add on to the dot (you could only draw circles, spirals or dots, text and cliche images were a no no!). We had to work in silence and the only word we could say was "WOW!". After about 10 mins, we stop and it was really "WOW!", through teamwork, we had transformed that small A4 piece of paper into a piece of Art! Very beautiful, very bright.. Next, the A4 paper was moved amongst the team and we worked on another team's work. It was amazing, how we also tranformed the work of others!

The Real Thing : Working on the Art Canvas
We couldn't wait to start working on the real thing but first, we had to do the base painting. Easy : splash the canvas with one coat of quick-dry colour paint and in 10 mins, we were raring to go.... ! Open ceremony.. with a little dot and yes, we started... Needless to day, I had a lot of fun drawing lots of circles and spirals! Soon, all to fast, it was time to stop! The paintings that were born were absolutely beautiful, I think all of us could never believe we had produced those paintings!

My Thoughts
Even if you think you can't paint, you should try this! It IS amazing what a team of people could do with just circles, dots and spirals. The painting had a life and the energy it was delivering said "Teamwork" and "Connectivity".

Meet the Author - Wena Poon

Yesterday, I had attended my first ever "Meet the Author" session at the Belle Body n Mind Spa at Orchard Grand Court, Killiney Road.

Wena Poon, is the author of "Lions in Winter", which is one of the selected short stories published in the book "Home and Away" published by the National Library Board as part of READ!Singapore 08. In person, Wena was pleasant and witty and spoke with a American accent having lived in the San Francisco for many years. She shared her experiences as a writer and her passion for writing. She pointed out that to write, you have fall in love with reading first! As a young girl, she loved Enid Blyton books. She also mentioned one of her favourite series "Chronicles of Narnia" which left a deep impression on her.

The Reading Facilitator's Workshop

Last Tuesday (22 Jul 08), I had an opportunity to attend a Reading Facilitators workshop at Geylang Community Library conducted by Mr Tony Lee where we were learning all about book club facilitation, the "whats" and the "hows".

Our inspiring Tony said that reading was about:
R - Respond (responding to a book)
E - Explore (exploring the books content)
A - Analyse (thinking, reflecting)
D - Develop (learning something from the book and making an improvement!)

It was an enjoyable session and we also got to watch part of the movie "The Namesake" and held a small book discussion relating to the book. Now I realise that bookclubs are really interesting stuff and they have great potential for people to share their experiences, knowledge and opinions. There was no right and wrong in what you had to say, you just say it, its just like talking to friends about a particular topic and this particular topic in this case, relates to whats in the book. It can be characters from the books whom you found interesting, or characters you can relate to, or situations you found interesting or can relate to. It can be a particular sentence that makes you laught out loud or even sentences that jolt you out of the chair! Sharing makes you bond with the book and the people around you, you suddenly realise, we are in one way or other, connected..

The Resurrection :)

Its interesting how I created that first post on my blog and leaving it empty since then. My colleague Ivan (The Rambling Librarian) has told me that there's much to be explored and it has sort of ignited my interest in blogging as a record of my thoughts, interest and my learnings. I guess its an excuse to say "I have no time to blog" cause... how long does it really take... perhaps probably 10 to 15 minutes for a post?

I agree that there's much to be explore... and this will be start of my learning journey.

This Korean Drama Serial is about a single mother who raises a child with Aids. She is a kind lady who looks out for the elderly and the poor, always positive about life and have a cheerful disposition! She has a really cute and adorable daughter and a father who is suffering from dementia. Life is hard on her but she strives to keep up. She has an interesting and touching love life! Her suitors incldue the father of the child and a doctor! The handsome and sauve doctor is played by Jung Hyuk... (i like his character in the show... he rescues the damsel in distress and falls in love with her)....

Learning "Live"

We are testing out the various functions, and playing around with the setups and layouts. Now.. :)... my blog actually looks quite nice. I am not sure whether I will continue blogging though. Am not sure whether I can be committed to do it on a consistent basis. Time is precious for me.

Class is coming to an end soon, but it is, perhaps, the beginning of a new era for me! I am really glad that I have signed up for this course to learn more about blogs. Bloggers, welcome this new kid on the block!

My First Blog Post

This is a moment to be recorded in my life history, perhaps. My first try at doing a blog! I know that blogging is the "in" thing to do now (or is it not?)... everybody's doing it. That's why I never got down to doing it, never liked to do what everybody else is doing.
But I signed up for a series of "new-media literacy" training and this one is about "Discover more about Blogs and blogging" . This is part of the practical that we are doing right down, this minute.

Mr Maish Nichani is our trainer, and he is asking us to do our first post of Singapore 2010, about Singapore being awarded the honour of hosting the Youth Olympics. This was announced yesterday at about 7.00pm.

Next, we will learn how to embed a video. I am choosing a video from Youtube about my favourite Korean Drama Serial "Thank You". Its quite easy, choose the video you want, copy the embed code and paste into your posts!
